On December 1st 1955, Parks refused to vacate her seat in the "colored" section in favor of a white passenger. She was arrested and charged with violating Alabama's segregation laws. Parks quickly became the face of the Montgomery Bus Boycott that ultimately resulted in segregation being deemed unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment. For her pivotal role in American history, the US Congress honored her as "The First Lady of Civil Rights and "The Mother of the Freedom Movement".
